Coffee and Statesboro are an even 3-3 against one another since January of 2015, but not for long. The Coffee Trojans will head out on the road to face off against the Statesboro Blue Devils at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Coffee's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three contests.
Even though Jenkins scored an imposing 65 points on Saturday, Coffee still came out on top. Coffee managed a 71-65 win over Jenkins.
Coffee's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Junitho Benson, who scored 17 points along with eight rebounds, and Marquavious Bussey, who scored 27 points along with five rebounds and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Bussey has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jy'darius Odums, who scored six points along with seven assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Statesboro escaped with a win on Saturday against Ware County by the margin of a single free throw, 53-52.
Statesboro got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Raylin Grant out in front who scored 22 points. Dartavian (dj) Brown was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with two steals.
Coffee's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-10. As for Statesboro, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season.
Tuesday's contest will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Benson and Grant. Benson has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 12.7 points, 2.1 steals, and 5.6 rebounds. For his part, Grant has averaged 14.7 points, 1.4 steals, and 5 rebounds.
Coffee opened the new year with a less-than-successful 46-38 defeat to Statesboro. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Brown, who scored 23 points along with three steals. Now that Coffee knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
