After flying high against the Lowcountry Leadership NaviGators last Wednesday, the Charleston Math & Science Riptide came back down to earth. Charleston Math & Science took a serious blow against Burke on Friday, falling 67-34. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Charleston Math & Science has scored all season.
Charleston Math & Science lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Marcus Grant, who scored eight points. Tyler Simmons was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Charleston Math & Science struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Burke racked up 17 assists.
Burke's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Melachi Singleton led the charge by scoring 16 points along with nine steals. Singleton continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jordan Nelson, who scored 14 points.
Charleston Math & Science has not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-8 record this season. As for Burke, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-6.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Charleston Math & Science will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against Baptist Hill at 7:30 p.m. on January 22nd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Baptist Hill is ranked 208th, while Charleston Math & Science is ranked 224th). As for Burke, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against North Charleston at 4:30 p.m. on January 20th. North Charleston will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive.
