Bellevue just keeps on dominating.
And it’s not just the Bellevue High School Wolverines, but two football teams from the affluent Seattle suburb. The Skyline Spartans are the top Class 4A team in the state, and both are on the radar nationally.
Bellevue (4-0) is the top-ranked Class 3A team in the state. Bellevue has opened the season with wins over teams from Oregon, California and one of the top Class 4A programs in the state (Bothell).
Friday night, they opened KingCo 3A/2A play with a win over Mount Si, 20-7.
"We knew Mount Si had returned a lot of guys and they played tough and physical," Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff told the Seattle Times. "But it is never about who we play, but how we play."
None of the current KingCo teams have beaten Bellevue since Mercer Island did it in 2000, the Times reported.
Two of the Bellevue’s biggest rivals aren’t in their league any more.
Skyline (4-0) and Issaquah (4-0) moved to up 4A this year. Skyline won the Class 3A state title last year.
Skyline, ranked No. 11 nationally by MaxPreps, opened its KingCo 4A season with a 49-0 win over Newport, another Bellevue school. The Spartans have outscored their four opponents this season 181-6.
Skyline quarterback Jake Heaps, being mentioned by CBS College Sports’ Tom Lemming as potentially the top prospect overall in the Class of 2010, threw three touchdown passes.
Football: Prosser Ruins Any Suspense
The Prosser Mustangs, the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state, took any suspense out of their game with East Valley of Yakima by scoring six touchdowns in the first quarter of a 68-0 win.
Kirby Moore, a Boise State commit, caught three of those touchdowns, and Dylan Bolt rushed for two more and scored a third on a blocked punt.
The Mustangs are averaging 58 points per game in 2008, including a 76-point outburst against Quincy. Under head coach Tom Moore, Prosser has won 30 of its last 31 games.
Football: Bainter Will Coach Junior National Team
Bothell coach Tom Bainter, who has led the Cougars to back-to-back Class 4A state runner-up finishes, is one of 10 coaches from around the nation chosen to coach USA Football’s Junior National Team.
Bainter will coach the team’s running backs during the competition, which runs from June 27 to July 5 in Canton, Ohio.
Eight countries will be represented at the event.
Basketball: Walker Set to Join Kingston’s Staff
Joyce Walker, arguably the top female basketball player from Washington, has found a new place to coach. She will be an assistant coach at Kingston High School.
Walker, who spent part of her career with the Harlem Globetrotters, coached at Garfield until 2007. Walker resigned because of a cancer scare and has dealt with addiction issues.
She joins coach Kevin Strozier, who lead the first-year Buccaneers to the Class 2A state tournament last season.
