Braxton Burmeister of La Jolla Country Day is the MaxPreps California Small Schools Player of the Year.

The San Diego Section has a rich football history, so it's worth noting the achievements of La Jolla Country Day quarterback Braxton Burmeister, who is the section's all-time passing leader.

In four seasons at LJCD, Burmeister has thrown for 11,512 yards and 127 touchdowns. Add in the 3,459 career rushing yards and Burmeister has 14,971 yards of total offense in his career. That total ranks him No. 4 all-time nationally for total offense, according to the National Federation of High Schools record book.

Burmeister also led La Jolla Country Day to the San Diego Section Division 5 championship in 2017. He threw for 4,461 yards and guided his team to the CIF Class 5-A Bowl Game, where LJCD fell to McClymonds (Oakland).

For his performance this year, Burmeister has been chosen as the MaxPreps California Small Schools Player of the Year. He will play for the Oregon Ducks next year.

Jim Kunau of Rancho Christian (Temecula) is the MaxPreps California Small Schools Coach of the Year. After a 3-2 start to the season, Kunau's team won its final 11 games to finish 14-2. The Eagles knocked off Santa Ana to win the Southern Section Division 13 championship and then beat Franklin (Los Angeles) of the Los Angeles City Section in the regional playoffs to advance to the CIF Class 6-AA bowl game. There, Rancho Christian defeated Amador (Sutter Creek) 38-13 for the state crown.

Burmeister and Kunau head a group of 60 players, divided into two teams, that comprise the MaxPreps California Small Schools All-State Football Team. The players come from schools that play in state enrollment divisions that generally have under 1,000 students.
