Softball Recap: Excelsior Charter Has No Trouble Against Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy

Excelsior Charter won the last time they faced Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy and things went their way on Thursday too. The Eagles put the hurt on Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy with a sharp 16-5 win. Considering the Eagles have won seven contests by more than nine runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Rylie Hunsaker made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.

In other batting news, Samantha Minghelli was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Alany Esparza, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple.

Excelsior Charter was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Excelsior Charter has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-8-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.2 runs over those games. As for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, they dropped their record down to 0-11 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Excelsior Charter will take on Riverside Prep at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Silver Knights have averaged an impressive 9.5 runs per game this season. As for Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, they will square off against Academy for Academic Excellence at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
