Lawrence County is 2-8 against Wesson since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Cougars will be playing at home against the Cobras at 6:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Lawrence County took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They put the hurt on Salem with a sharp 9-3 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won four in a row.
Laicie Bridges spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Addie Raye Pennington, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Another player making a difference was Adaya Ball, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Wesson got the win against Franklin County on Monday by a conclusive 11-1.
Maddie Sanders made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. Sanders was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off three home runs and seven RBI while going 3-for-3. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in runs (three).
In other batting news, Macy Loy was excellent, scoring three runs while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Kenslie Carter was another key player, scoring two runs.
Wesson hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive matchups.
Wesson's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Lawrence County, their victory bumped their record up to 15-11.
Tuesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lawrence County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .312. However, it's not like Wesson struggles in that department as they've averaged .380. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lawrence County suffered a grim 13-3 defeat to Wesson when the teams last played back in March. Will the Cougars have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
