Wooster hasn't had much luck against Dayton recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Wooster Colts will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Dayton Dust Devils at 10:00 a.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
If Wooster beats Dayton with four runs on Saturday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. Wooster never let Fernley get on the board and left with a 4-0 victory on Saturday. The win continues a trend for the Colts in their matchups with the Vaqueros: they've now won five in a row.
Wooster got a great performance from Jett Rotsma as he kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Cody Barb was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Edgar Nunez Montano, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Dayton came tearing into Tuesday's game with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 12.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Bulldogs as they made off with a 9-1 victory. While the Dust Devils didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Viliami Tulimafua-Curran looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024.
On the hitting side, Duke Evans and Ivor Evans did most of the damage at the plate: Duke scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Ivor went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Ivor is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as he's now launched at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was River Aten, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Dayton pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Wooster, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Wooster has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Dayton struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Wooster might still be hurting after the 10-2 loss they got from Dayton in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Will Wooster have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more baseball content.
