Lafayette and Smithfield are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2018, but not for long. The Lafayette Rams will head out on the road to face off against the Smithfield Packers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lafayette is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
After soaring to a 31-point victory in their last game, Lafayette came back down to earth on Tuesday. They fell just short of Warhill by a score of 56-54. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Lafayette has suffered yet this season.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Dynasti Pierce, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Kenzie Charity, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds.
Smithfield suffered their biggest defeat yet this season on Thursday. They were dealt a 79-25 defeat at the hands of Grafton. While losing is never fun, Smithfield can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 334th, while Grafton is ranked 58th).
Lafayette now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Smithfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.
Lafayette was able to grind out a solid win over Smithfield in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, winning 38-27. The rematch might be a little tougher for Lafayette since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
