Battle of the Unbeatens
The undefeated Calvert Hall Cardinals hosted unbeaten St. Mary’s–Annapolis on Tuesday and beat them convincingly, 13-8.
The Saints entered the game fresh off a 17-5 trouncing of Archbishop Spalding while the Cardinals looked to stay hot following a narrow, 11-10, win over powerhouse Boys Latin last week.
Calvert Hall exploded out of the gates and opened the game with three-straight goals and ended the half with three more to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, the Saints’ Peter Athens (goal, assist) and Mark McNeill scored within 15 seconds of each other and St. Mary’s added one more to storm back within one. But, toward the end of the third quarter, Cardinal midfielder Ryan Gutowski (goal, assist) won seven-straight faceoffs to spark a five-goal run to put away the Saints.
"That was the key," Calvert Hall Coach Bryan Kelly told the Baltimore Sun. "He really was huge in the second half for us. When they got the ball early on, they were getting it in the net, but we started to control the ball a little bit more on faceoffs, and that was definitely a critical point for us to come out with the W."
"I was able to, based on how they were playing, find the open spaces," Gutowski told the Baltimore Sun. "It helped us a lot. We started winning them, getting a couple goals, and we really started building momentum off that."
Cardinal Patrick Fanshaw led all scorers with four goals and an assist. Jason McFadden had three goals and two assists, and Sean Maguire added two goals and an assist. Goalie Greg Dutton recorded 15 saves to spearhead the defense.
J.P. Dalton scored three goals for St. Mary’s, and Matt Bell added two goals and two assists.
”We are very thankful for the win against St Mary's. They are a very good team and it was a hard fought game and we are thankful we came out on the winning end,” Cardinal coach Bryan Kelly said.
Calvert Hall's demanding schedule didn’t get any easier later in the week when it hosted McDonogh (9-1 heading into the game) on Friday.
The Cardinals beat the Eagles, 5-2, behind Sean Maguire’s two fourth-quarter goals.
Jason McFadden (heading to Georgetown), Patrick Fanshaw and Ryan Gutowski scored the other three goals to pace Calvert Hall’s offense.
Joe Impalliara was stellar on faceoffs for the Cardinals, winning 8 of 12.
Defensively, goalie Greg Dutton had 14 saves to preserve the victory and keep the Cardinals’ record perfect at 9-0.
McDonogh (9-2) was led on defense by Princeton-bound Tyler Fiorito along with stellar play from Tyler Goldberg, Towson-bound defender KC Woods and Matt Hart.
Archbishop Spalding Stuns Boys Latin
Archbishop Spalding halted a three-game losing streak in fine style Friday night, defeating MIAA-A powerhouse Boys Latin, 14-6.
Navy-bound Rich May (four goals) and Matt Burke (three goals) led the offensive surge and Tyler Powell came up huge in goal, recording 14 saves, to lead the Cavaliers’ upset over the Lakers.
Matt King won 15 of 22 faceoffs and Mike Poiter and Andrew Scalley contributed two goals and two assists apiece to run Spalding’s record to 5-3.
The Cavaliers trailed, 4-3, at the half, but exploded for 11 goals in the second half, out-scoring the Lakers, 4-0, in the third quarter.
The Cavaliers will try not to look past Friends (4-4) on Tuesday before hosting undefeated Calvert Hall (9-0) on Friday.
Girls IAAM B
The Garrison Forest Grizzlies (8-1) are off to a hot start under coach Traci Davis, winning eight of their first nine games (their lone loss was to IAAM A St. Mary’s).
This past week they notched their fifth and sixth wins in a row against regional rivals Chapelgate Christian, 17-6, and Annapolis Area Christian, 12-2.
They hope to keep that winning streak alive this coming week when they host St. Johns Catholic Prep (2-3) and travel to the Glenelg Country School (0-6)
Boys MIAA B
Undefeated Archbishop Curley opened the week by defeating Glenelg Country, 9-2. Despite the one-sided score, Glenelg is the first team to hold the Friars under double digits this season.
On Sunday Curley played Orchard Park, N.Y. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Quakers (3-0) defeated the Friars, 11-7, handing them their first loss of the season.
Archbishop Curley will look to rebound this week at Annapolis Area Christian (3-6) and then hosting undefeated John Carroll (5-0).
Player of the Week
