Woodland is 9-1 against Calais since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Dragons will venture away from home to challenge the Blue Devils at 1:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Calais will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Woodland extended their winning streak to five on Wednesday. The Dragons put the hurt on Penobscot Valley with a sharp 12-2 victory. That's two games straight that the Dragons have won by exactly ten runs.
Gaige Farrar spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up nine Ks. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Woodland got a massive performance out of Micah Chesebrough, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaac Downing, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Woodland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Calais got the win against Machias on Tuesday by a conclusive 8-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Blue Devils.
Noah White made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits (and only one walk). He has become a key player for Calais: the team is undefeated when he posts at least eight strikeouts, but 2-3 otherwise. White was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kaeson Dana, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Calais' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-3 when he doesn't).
Woodland's record is now 8-3. As for Calais, their record now sits at 5-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Woodland has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Calais struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Woodland came out on top in a nail-biter against Calais in their previous meeting on May 2nd, sneaking past 4-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dragons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
