School officials at
Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) have declared Friday, Oct. 1 a teacher workday, to allow players, band members, and fans to make the six-hour drive to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for the team's Friday night showdown with
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
The Wildcats, two-time defending 5A state champions in Georgia, are undefeated and are prepared to do battle with Aquinas, a national power in its own right and winner of 46 of its last 48 games.
Rather than face poor attendance numbers in the classroom, school board members decided to schedule the teacher workday to ensure that students would not skip class in order to make the trip to the game.
"We might have had a lot of sick kids that day," athletic department secretary Dana Smith told the Florida Times-Union. "Having the day off makes it easy to travel and support the team."
This is the second time that Camden County will be playing an opponent from the Sunshine State. The Wildcats outlasted
Central (Miami) 45-42 on Sept. 3.
Both teams are ranked in the Xcellent 25 Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. Camden County is No. 11, while Aquinas checks in at 13.
