Newton took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They took down the Eastside Eagles 39-24. This was payback for the Rams, who suffered a 26-15 defeat the last time these two teams met.
Newton found their leader in sophomore Kevin Hartsfield, who rushed for 185 yards and one TD while picking up 10.3 yards per carry. The team also got some help courtesy of Deron Benson, who threw for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 13 passes.
Despite the loss, Eastside still got an impressive performance from Myles Mims, who rushed for 145 yards and two scores. Another player making a difference was Payton Shaw, who threw for 154 yards and one TD.
Looking ahead, Newton will head out on the road to square off against Alcovy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Eastside, they will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on Hiram at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
