Poway and San Marcos are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Titans will challenge the Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Poway is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.
Poway barely beat Rancho Bernardo the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Titans put the hurt on the Broncos with a sharp 9-2 win on Wednesday. The victory continues a trend for the Titans in their matchups with the Broncos: they've now won six in a row.
Mya McGowan made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. McGowan was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other pitching news, Aubrey Stiritz looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Sophia Burmeister, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run and three RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Loper, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three RBI and one double.
Poway kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rancho Bernardo only managed four hits.
Mission Hills hit San Marcos with a five-run third inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Knights came up short against the Grizzlies, falling 9-1.
Mackenzie Hughes made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
Poway's record now sits at 17-5. As for San Marcos, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-10 record this season.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Poway hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like San Marcos struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Poway took their win against San Marcos in their previous matchup back in April by a conclusive 15-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
