The Webster County Highlanders will head out on the road to challenge the Tug Valley Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Webster County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past nine matchups -- so hopefully Tug Valley likes a good challenge.
Webster County put the finishing touches on their eighth blowout victory of the season on Monday. They blew past Braxton County, posting a 92-46 victory at home. Given Webster County's advantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while Braxton County is ranked 109th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Riley Clevenger was his usual excellent self, scoring 35 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Raydan Triplett was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with eight rebounds and seven steals.
Meanwhile, Tug Valley pushed their score all the way to 66 on Saturday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 78-66 to Martin County.
Webster County pushed their record up to 15-1 with that victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.9 points per game. As for Tug Valley, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 8-2.
Webster County came up short against Tug Valley in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, falling 69-59. Can Webster County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
