The St. Mary's Pirates's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their fifth straight loss. They fell 57-48 to Buena Vista. While losing is never fun, St. Mary's can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Buena Vista is ranked 77th).
When it comes to explaining why St. Mary's lost, one person who can't be blamed is Josh Padrnos. Despite the final result, he scored 11 points along with six rebounds. Jackson Lewis was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with seven rebounds.
Buena Vista's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Julian Lopez-Olsen led the charge by scoring 23 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Lopez-Olsen has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaden Schell, who scored 11 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.
St. Mary's loss was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-6. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.7 points per game. As for Buena Vista, their victory bumped their record up to 6-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will challenge Manitou Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Buena Vista, they will head out on the road to take on Woodland Park at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
