2A Western recap September 24, 2013
Aspen's Ryan Fitzgerald recorded the longest rushing play in 2A Western this season in his game against Bayfield last week. Fitzgerald scampered for 90 yards on the play and finished with 225 on the day as his team bested the Wolverines.
Bayfield's dynamic duo of Kelton McCoy and Taed Heydinger proved tough for Aspen to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. McCoy threw for 102 yards and Heydinger had 40 yards receiving. Adam Ridens helped Bayfield's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 20 yards.
Gary Heide's team's dynamic duo of McCoy and Heydinger proved to be unstoppable against Mike Sirko's team, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Noah Schoenberger was a key player and the best on defense this week as Basalt fell to Pagosa Springs. He grabbed 3.0 sacks.
Heydinger was the best receiver in the league this week as the Wolverines fell to the Skiers.
McCoy put up the best numbers in passing as Bayfield fell to Aspen.
Fitzgerald provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Skiers topped the Wolverines.
Fitzgerald was a beast in the backfield as Aspen bested Bayfield.
Fitzgerald was the most successful running back in the league this week. Teammate Tyler Tick added to the ground attack by rushing for 56 yards.
Grand Valley's Tyler Scott and Ivan Arizaga have formed a dream team this season, leading 2A Western in both passing and receiving yards. Scott has thrown for 814 yards this season, while Arizaga, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 21 catches for 371 yards. The Skiers' Fitzgerald leads the league in rushing yards with 700.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Aspen takes on second place Olathe.
Aspen made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 8,268 from 10,090. The advance stemmed from a 24-6 victory over the Wolverines last week.
