The Del Norte Tigers will head out on the road to challenge the Trinidad Miners at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Del Norte has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Del Norte scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They put the hurt on Custer County with a sharp 53-28 win. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Del Norte has posted against Custer County since February 19, 2019.
Del Norte can attribute much of their success to Kelby Mondragon, who scored 13 points along with six assists and four steals, and Tytus Atencio, who scored 15 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that Atencio scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Lashawn Trujillo, who scored six points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, this season hasn't been kind to Trinidad, who are still winless after their 12th match. They were outmatched by Crested Butte at home and fell 61-27. While losing is never fun, Trinidad can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 330th, while Crested Butte is ranked 95th).
Del Norte's victory bumped their record up to 4-8. As for Trinidad, they dropped their record down to 0-12 with that defeat, which was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season.
Everything came up roses for Del Norte against Trinidad in their previous matchup back in February of 2023 as the squad secured a 84-30 victory. With Del Norte ahead 51-16 at the half, the match was all but over already.
