The Wabaunsee Chargers will be playing at home against the Valley Heights Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Last Friday, Wabaunsee made easy work of Sacred Heart and carried off a 30-6 victory. Wabaunsee pushed the score to 22-0 by the end of the third, a deficit Sacred Heart had little chance of recovering from.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Wabaunsee to victory, but perhaps none more so than Wyatt Wurtz, who rushed for 112 yards on only 14 carries. Another player making a difference was Zach Frank, who rushed for 50 yards and three touchdowns.
Wabaunsee's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Leading the way was Jude Meseke and his two sacks.
Meanwhile, Valley Heights had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 35.8 points), and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They walked away with a 38-30 win over Marysville. 38 seems to be a good number for Valley Heights as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of points in their previous game.
Valley Heights' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kaison Bigham led the charge by rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden DeWalt, who rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on only 11 carries.
The victory makes it two in a row for Wabaunsee and bumps their season record up to 4-2. They've been dominating across those matches too: they took their wins by an average of 39 points. As for Valley Heights, their win was their third straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Wabaunsee has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 227.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Valley Heights struggles in that department as they've been even better at 264.3 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Wabaunsee against Valley Heights when the teams last played back in October of 2022 as the team secured a 56-8 win. Does Wabaunsee have another victory up their sleeve, or will Valley Heights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
