Basketball Recap: Desert Christian Comes Up Short

Desert Christian was the 41-32 winner over Tombstone when they last played one another back in December of 2021, but their luck changed this time around. The Desert Christian Eagles took a blow against the Tombstone Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, falling 51-17. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 113th, while the Yellow Jackets are ranked 27th).

Desert Christian's loss came despite strong showings from Emmy Welch and Abby Numer. Welch posted six points in addition to seven boards and three steals, while Numer put up three points along with ten boards and three steals. Welch is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Priscilla Genteman, who had four points and four steals.

Tombstone got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Damaris Alvarez out in front who went 10 of 14 on her way to 23 points. Another player making a difference was Rachel Thursby, who went 6 of 12 on her way to 16 points.

Desert Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Tombstone, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-1.

Desert Christian didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 40-16 victory against Catalina on the 5th. As for Tombstone, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 42-34 win against St. David on the 6th.
