The Calhoun Academy Cavaliers's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Jefferson Davis Academy Raiders at 12:00 p.m. on December 29th. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
On Wednesday, it was a hard-fought game, but Calhoun Academy had to settle for a 51-49 loss against Thomas Heyward Academy.
Calhoun Academy's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Colt Layton, who scored 23 points along with five rebounds and five steals, and Connor Hayes who scored 15 points along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Those 23 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Turner Houck, who scored four points.
Calhoun Academy struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Jefferson Davis Academy's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their fourth straight loss. They fell just short of Colleton Prep Academy by a score of 58-55. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Colson Loadholt put forth a good effort for the losing side as he scored 24 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. The game was his eighth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nasir Void, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Calhoun Academy's record now sits at 5-3. As for Jefferson Davis Academy, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's matchup: Calhoun Academy have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.4 threes per game. It's a different story for Jefferson Davis Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 2.6 threes per game. Given Calhoun Academy's sizeable advantage in that area, Jefferson Davis Academy will need to find a way to close that gap.
Calhoun Academy took their victory against Jefferson Davis Academy in their previous meeting back in January by a conclusive 57-34. The rematch might be a little tougher for Calhoun Academy since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
