The Mendota Trojans will venture away from home to challenge the Newman Central Catholic Comets at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Mendota has now lost seven straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since the 1st.
Mendota lost 22-1 to Orion on Friday. The matchup marked the Trojans' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Mendota saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Addy Perryman, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last game, Newman Central Catholic made sure to put some runs up on the board against Hall on Thursday. The Comets put the hurt on the Red Devils with a sharp 15-4 win.
Gianna Vance was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits (and not a single walk). Vance was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs and three RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Newman Central Catholic got a massive performance out of Amiya Rodriguez, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with four runs and one RBI. That's the most runs Rodriguez has posted since back in April of 2024. Kaylee Benyo was another key player, going 3-for-5 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run.
Newman Central Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hall only managed six hits.
Mendota's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Newman Central Catholic, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 5-10.
Newman Central Catholic's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mendota has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. It's a different story for Newman Central Catholic, though, as they've been averaging 9 hits. Given Mendota's sizable advantage in that area, the Comets will need to find a way to close that gap.
Mendota might still be hurting after the 15-7 defeat they got from Newman Central Catholic in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Trojans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
