The La Costa Canyon Mavericks will head out on the road to face off against the Carlsbad Lancers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. La Costa Canyon will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 80th, while Carlsbad is ranked 14th).
Last Friday, La Costa Canyon came up short against Mission Hills and fell 28-21. La Costa Canyon has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Carlsbad put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their undefeated season alive. They came out on top against Torrey Pines by a score of 17-7.
Carlsbad's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Julian Sayin led the charge by rushing for two yards and a touchdown, while also throwing for 229 yards and a touchdown. Carlsbad also got a significant boost from Mason Walsh, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 111 yards.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Torrey Pines to a paltry 190 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Carlsbad's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out five times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Jude McLellan and his two sacks.
La Costa Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Carlsbad, their victory was their eighth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 8-0.
La Costa Canyon was taken down by Carlsbad 35-0 in their previous meeting back in October of 2022. Can La Costa Canyon avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
