Highland hasn't had much luck against Rio Grande recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Hornets will square off against the Ravens at 6:00 p.m. Highland has given up an average of 11.4 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Highland is headed into Thursday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fifth straight game on Tuesday. They came up short against St. Pius X, falling 17-5.
Highland saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jose Tapia, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double marked the first that Tapia hit this season. Miguel Leyba was another, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Rio Grande won against St. Pius X on Saturday with 11 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Ravens never let West Mesa get on the board and left with an 11-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Ravens, who have now won six matches by nine runs or more so far this season.
Luis Salinas made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Sebastian Chavez was incredible, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Reyes Martinez, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Rio Grande kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Rio Grande's win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 11-9. As for Highland, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12-1.
Highland might still be hurting after the 12-2 loss they got from Rio Grande in their previous matchup back in April of 2018. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
