5A Region I District 8 recap Nov. 7, 2012
Midway extended the longest winning streak in 5A Region I District 8 this week by beating Harker Heights, 42-14. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.
Copperas Cove moved up to 53 from 91 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Bulldawgs were able to make move up by defeating Temple 51-14.
Belton's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Peter Shelburne threw for 313 and three touchdowns and Durham Smythe had 113 yards receiving. On the ground Shane Stafford chipped in 69 yards.
Belton's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Tigers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Shelburne has thrown for 1985 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, while Derick Bates has 35 catches for 640 yards. Brandon Rhoads leads the league in rushing with 718 yards.
Going into this week's game against Midway, the Tigers' Shelburne needs 15 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season.
Two of the top units in 5A Region I District 8 will face off this week when Belton takes on the Panthers. Rodney Southern's team's offense has scored 300 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while Midway has allowed only 150 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Panthers take on the Tigers. As it stands, Midway is in first, while Belton is in fifth.
Ellison made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 5,325 from 5,739. The improvement was the result of 54-22 victory over the Eagles last week.
