Union City has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will face off against the Phillipsburg Stateliners at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Jersey (Union City is ranked 28th, while Phillipsburg is ranked 16th).
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Union City had no problem doing just that on Friday. They secured a 20-14 W over West Orange.
Mark Boyd continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 119 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries. Boyd is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last three games he's played.
Another reason for the win was Union City's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. Adrian Villalta was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.
Meanwhile, Phillipsburg entered their tilt with Westfield with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Phillipsburg enjoyed a cozy 42-24 victory over Westfield on Friday.
It was another big night for John Wargo, who rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.7 yards per carry. Matthew Scerbo jr. was in the mix as well, providing Phillipsburg with two touchdowns.
Union City's victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.3 points per game. As for Phillipsburg, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.
Things could have been worse for Union City, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 23-6 loss to Phillipsburg in their previous matchup back in November of 2021. Can Union City avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
