Cornerstone Charter and Bethany Community are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Cardinals are taking a road trip to take on the Wolves at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Cornerstone Charter is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Cornerstone Charter lost 15-1 to Northwood on Wednesday. The Cardinals have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, Bethany Community had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Cardinals with a sharp 13-1 win. The game was the first time the Wolves have beaten the Cardinals on their field since May 21, 2021.
Ryan Rudd was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brooks McDowell, who went 4-for-5 with seven RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jesse Tucker, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Bethany Community pushed their record up to 15-3 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.8 runs over those games. As for Cornerstone Charter, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Cornerstone Charter has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Bethany Community struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Cornerstone Charter might still be hurting after the 13-1 loss they got from Bethany Community when the teams last played on Tuesday. Can the Cardinals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
