The Moreau Catholic Mariners are taking a road trip to face off against the Miramonte Matadors at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Moreau Catholic made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Mission San Jose, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Mariners' pitcher stepped up to hand the Warriors an 11-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Mariners' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Yazlin Rodriguez made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Lexi Mejia was a standout: she scored a run and stole two bases while going 4-for-4. Sienna Rios was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Moreau Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Miramonte came tearing into Monday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Grizzlies with a sharp 10-0 victory. Considering the Matadors have won four games by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Moreau Catholic, Miramonte also got a great game from a two-way player: Abby Warren. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Warren was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Lucy Daoust was incredible, scoring two runs while going 3-for-3. Another player making a difference was Avery Haynes, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and one stolen base.
Miramonte's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Moreau Catholic, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-3.
Wednesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Moreau Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .350. However, it's not like Miramonte struggles in that department as they've averaged .329. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Moreau Catholic's way against Miramonte when the teams last played back in March of 2016, as Moreau Catholic made off with an 18-8 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mariners since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
