Wellington had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Sarasota Sailors a 15-0 shutout on Friday. Considering the Wolverines have won ten matches by more than six runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Tori Payne was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI.
In other batting news, Wellington got a massive performance out of Kaylee Riles, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those four RBI gave Riles a new career-high. Angelina Baronci was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two doubles.
Wellington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .655. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sarasota only posted an OBP of .263.
The win was the ninth in a row for Wellington, bringing their record up to 22-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Sarasota, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 21-8 record.
As of now, neither Wellington nor the Sailors have any future games scheduled.
