Basketball Recap: Plainfield South Comes Up Short

On Monday, the Plainfield South Cougars lost to the Trinity Blazers on the road by a 65-48 margin. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 308th, while the Blazers are ranked 70th).

When it comes to explaining why Plainfield South lost, don't look at Layla Lesure. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds. What's more, Lesure also racked up three blocks, the most she's had since back in December of 2023. Zahira Edwards was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Even though they lost, Plainfield South smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in eight consecutive contests.

Plainfield South has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-13 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.2 points per game. As for Trinity, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-7.

Plainfield South has already played their next game, a 57-54 defeat against Joliet Central on the 22nd. As for Trinity, they will face off against Providence Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
