Covington hasn't had much luck against Brighton recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Chargers are taking a road trip to take on the Cardinals at 5:30 p.m. Covington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Covington had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the seven-run drubbing they dealt Bartlett on Monday. The Chargers put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 12-5 win. The Chargers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by six runs or more this season.
Kinslee Hamm was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off seven hits. Hamm was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 1-for-4.
In other batting news, Lyv Cromwell was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-5. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Kale Wheeler, who scored two runs while going 4-for-5.
Covington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .436. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Brighton entered their tilt with Munford on Thursday with seven consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with eight. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Cougars.
Laney Lawson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Leah Finley, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two runs. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryleigh McCain, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI.
Brighton pushed their record up to 13-6-2 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Covington, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. Covington hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.5 home runs per game. However, it's not like Brighton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Covington might still be hurting after the 17-7 loss they got from Brighton in their previous matchup back in March. Can the Chargers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
