The Edinburg Bobcats suffered their closest defeat yet this season on Friday. They fell just short of La Joya by a score of 47-44. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Edinburg in their matchups with La Joya: they've now lost three in a row.
Despite the loss, Edinburg saw an underclassman step up: Axel Navarro scored 18 points along with nine rebounds and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Navarro has scored all season. Ryan Rivera was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
La Joya's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Leo Villarreal, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Villarreal continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Hunter Morales, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Edinburg bumped their record down to 14-8 with that loss, which was their fourth straight on the road. As for La Joya, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-13.
Edinburg will be playing in front of their home fans against Edinburg North at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for La Joya, they will head out on the road to challenge Economedes at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Economedes and La Joya are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
