Baseball Recap: Iona Prep Victorious

Iona Prep lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Monsignor Farrell, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Monday's contest. Iona Prep's pitchers stepped up to hand Monsignor Farrell an 8-0 shutout on Monday. This was payback for the Gaels, who suffered a 4-2 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Shane Jelenevsky tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Devin Diaz and Luke Tran did most of the damage at the plate: Diaz scored two runs while going 2-for-4, while Tran scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. Iona Prep is undefeated when Diaz posts two or more runs, but 1-2-1 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Julian Guzman, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Iona Prep kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive games.

Iona Prep's win bumped their record up to 4-2-1. As for Monsignor Farrell, their loss was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Iona Prep will face off against St. Joseph-by-the-Sea at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Monsignor Farrell, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Monsignor Farrell Lions face off against Cardinal Hayes Cardinals at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. They are facing Cardinal Hayes at the right time seeing as Cardinal Hayes is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
