The Laney Buccaneers put another one in the bag on Tuesday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against West Brunswick by a score of 43-35. Given Laney's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 45th, while West Brunswick is ranked 241st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Laney to victory were Aniece Lewis and Lauren Bastable. Lewis scored 12 points along with five assists and five rebounds, while Bastable scored 17 points along with six rebounds. The match was Bastable's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Piper Conklin, who scored seven points along with six rebounds.
Several Trojans players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Hailey Woodard, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and three steals. Woodard is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Saniya Stanley, who scored ten points along with five rebounds.
Laney's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-0. As for West Brunswick, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-3.
Laney will head out on the road to face off against Ashley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average, (Ashley: 28.3, Laney: 28.7) so any points scored will be well earned. West Brunswick will be home for the holidays to greet Hoggard at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hoggard is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
