Denver West had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They were the clear victor by a 35-15 margin over the Prospect Ridge Academy Miners on Friday.
Denver West's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Robert Wittke led the charge by rushing for 46 yards and a touchdown. Wittke also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, making five total tackles (2.0 for loss) and defending a pass. Despite the loss, Prospect Ridge Academy still got an impressive performance from Machaon Puga, who rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. Puga got the majority of those yards when he took off on a run and that went for an incredible54 yards.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Denver West will head out to square off against Englewood at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Englewood focused on turnovers this week as team gave up four last Thursday. As for Prospect Ridge Academy, they are taking a road trip to face off against Manitou Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Prospect Ridge Academy will come in still looking for their first win of the season.
