On Monday, the Northwest Catholic Lions faced the Newington Nor'easters in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Northwest Catholic fell just short of Newington by a score of 53-51. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Northwest Catholic has suffered yet this season.
Newington got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Bela Cucuta out in front who scored 20 points along with two steals and two blocks. That makes it 11 consecutive games in which Cucuta has scored at least a third of Newington's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Hope Romanello, who scored eight points along with 11 rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Northwest Catholic and nudges their season record down to 7-3. As for Newington, the win was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 9-2.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Northwest Catholic will take on East Catholic at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Newington, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Bristol Central at 5:30 p.m.
