Russell is a perfect 4-0 against Fleming County since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Red Devils are taking a road trip to face off against the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. Russell's pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so Fleming County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
While Russell didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-22-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against Morgan County on Friday as they made off with a 12-2 victory. The win continues a trend for the Red Devils in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won six in a row.
Jayden Frasure made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Frasure was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kyle Mokas, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Hayden McGuire, who scored two runs while going 3-for-3.
Russell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .568. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Morgan County only posted an OBP of .261.
Meanwhile, Fleming County had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over Mason County on Wednesday.
Preston Cropper was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024. Austin Robertson was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double.
The win got Fleming County back to even at 6-6. As for Russell, their record now sits at 10-3.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Russell has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Fleming County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Russell's way against Fleming County when the teams last played back in April of 2017, as Russell made off with a 13-3 victory. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
