The Clark Cougars won the last time they faced the Marshall Rams, and things went their way on Saturday too. Clark snuck past Marshall with a 46-42 win. Given Clark's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Marshall is ranked 849th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Clark found their leader in underclassman Jaden Flemons, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Flemons is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Kristian Burgan, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds.
Marshall lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jason Vidaurri, who scored ten points. Aric Goodman was another key contributor, scoring six points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Marshall were working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. This was only their 16th loss (out of 22 games) when they've passed the ball that well.
Clark's win bumped their record up to 15-11. As for Marshall, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost 11 of their last 12 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-19 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Clark will take on Lee at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Lee's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last four games. As for Marshall, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Reagan at 6:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Reagan has five straight victories, Marshall has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
