If the Deming Wildcats were feeling good off their 66-20 takedown of the Hatch Valley Bears last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Deming suffered a rough 53-31 defeat at the hands of Mayfield on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Deming can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 67th, while Mayfield is ranked ninth).
Despite the loss, Deming still got an impressive performance from Jacqueline Aguayo, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Aguayo is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played. Another player making a difference was Yahaira Bejarano, who scored six points along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Mayfield got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jazlene Ruiz out in front who scored 15 points along with six rebounds and six steals. Ruiz is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Lorrena Viarreal was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with four steals.
Deming's loss dropped their record down to 6-9. As for Mayfield, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season.
Deming will be playing in front of their home fans against Las Cruces at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Las Cruces focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight last Saturday. As for Mayfield, they will head out on the road to square off against Carlsbad at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
