Basketball Recap: John F. Kennedy Falls Despite Big Games from Makayla Aragon and Emily Medrano

John F. Kennedy was the 39-25 winner over KIPP Somos Collegiate when they last played one another back in November, but their luck changed this time around. The John F. Kennedy Rockets took a 29-25 hit to the loss column at the hands of the KIPP Somos Collegiate Tigers. The Rockets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Emily Medrano and Makayla Aragon certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Medrano posted seven points along with eight boards and six steals, while Aragon put up nine points in addition to eight boards and three steals. Aragon has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played.

KIPP Somos Collegiate was led to victory by Elizabeth Pena and TyKirah Steele. Pena had 12 points, while Steele posted nine points. That makes it five consecutive games in which Pena has scored at least a third of KIPP Somos Collegiate's points.

John F. Kennedy's loss dropped their record down to 7-16. As for KIPP Somos Collegiate, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John F. Kennedy and Ingram Moore will round out the year against one another at at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. As for KIPP Somos Collegiate, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against San Antonio S.T.E.A.M. Academy at 5:30 p.m. on January 8, 2025.
