The Mayfield Wildcats will challenge the Avon Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mayfield is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.
Mayfield is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They came out on top against St. Joseph Academy by a score of 7-2.
Riley Seitz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mayfield let Brooke Tirabassi and Vivien Armstrong run wild. Tirabassi went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run, while Armstrong went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave Armstrong a new career-high. Ella Garrett was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Mayfield kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They are 9-3 when they post 11 or more hits.
Avon not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 24th (when they won 11-0). They put the hurt on Nordonia with a sharp 11-1 victory.
Maria Young was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Young was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Michaela Jankowski was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Another player making a difference was Jocelin Ochs, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one double.
The win got Avon back to even at 13-13. As for Mayfield, they now have a winning record of 14-13.
Avon's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Mayfield hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .321. It's a different story for Avon, though, as they've only averaged .242. Will they be able to contain Mayfield's hitters?
Mayfield might still be hurting after the 6-0 defeat they got from Avon in their previous matchup back in March of 2022. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
