The Charleston Trojans will take on the Robinson Maroons at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Charleston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.
Charleston took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Marshall 10-9. The win continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won four in a row.
Railyn Cox made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched seven innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off 11 hits. Cox was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Lainie Keefer was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one double. Another player making a difference was Blair Ritchey, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Robinson fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Edwards County on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Lions by a score of 8-6.
Like Charleston, Robinson also got a great game from a two-way player: Eva Herman. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over eight innings while giving up seven earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Herman was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. She is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, Ella Bunten made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 4-for-5 with two runs and two doubles. Brylee Yates was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run.
Charleston's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-6. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Robinson, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-10 record this season.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Charleston hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .342. However, it's not like Robinson struggles in that department as they've averaged .339. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Charleston beat Robinson 6-3 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Trojans repeat their success, or do the Maroons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
