American Fork is a perfect 10-0 against Westlake since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Cavemen will be playing in front of their home fans against the Thunder at 3:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (American Fork has five straight victories, Westlake has nine straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
American Fork is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Utah's top teams: Skyridge, who was ranked 15th at the time (American Fork was ranked first). The Cavemen put the hurt on the Falcons with a sharp 14-4 win on Friday. The Cavemen might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 12 games by six runs or more this season.
Cache Poulson and Harry Gardner did most of the damage at the plate: Poulson went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Gardner went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs Poulson has posted since back in May of 2024. CJ Mascaro was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: American Fork kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in five consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Westlake came up short against Lone Peak on Friday, falling 8-1.
Westlake saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jensen Campbell, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run. Those stolen bases marked the first that Campbell has snagged this season.
American Fork's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-4. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for Westlake, their loss dropped their record down to 5-17.
Westlake's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: American Fork has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.4 hits per game. It's a different story for Westlake, though, as they've been averaging 10.1 hits. Given American Fork's sizable advantage in that area, the Thunder will need to find a way to close that gap.
American Fork took their victory against Westlake when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 22-9 score. Do the Cavemen have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Thunder turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
