The Greenbrier West Cavaliers will head out on the road to take on the Webster County Highlanders at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Greenbrier West has now lost seven straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since the 7th.
On Tuesday, Greenbrier West came up short against Greater Beckley Christian and fell 8-5.
Landen Doss was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Landon McClung made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Brenton Hodge also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
St. Marys hit Webster County with a four-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Highlanders took a 7-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Blue Devils. The Highlanders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Webster County saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Greyden Channel, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Greenbrier West's record is now 4-9. As for Webster County, their record now sits at 4-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Greenbrier West has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Webster County struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 5.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Greenbrier West took their win against Webster County in their previous matchup back in May of 2023 by a conclusive 23-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cavaliers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
