The Berkeley Yellowjackets entered their tilt with the Hayward Farmers with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. Berkeley slipped by Hayward 42-41 on Saturday. This was one game where the offenses had no trouble playing at a high level.
Deontae Faison went supernova for Berkeley, throwing for 379 yards and five touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes, and also rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown. Faison is on a roll when it comes to passing touchdowns, as he's now passed for three or more in the last three games he's played. Jalen Harris was another key contributor, picking up 131 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Hayward's lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Kennedy Braziel, who rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Maurice Hall, who rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on only ten carries.
Berkeley's win was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-3. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-7 Encinal and 2-6 Castro Valley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 37.5% over those games). As for Hayward, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Berkeley will face off against Mt. Eden at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mt. Eden comes in still looking for their first win of the season. As for Hayward, they will head out on the road to face off against Irvington at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
