Football Recap: Jaysis Villegas Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Bullard

Center's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 44-27 win over the Bullard Panthers. The Roughriders haven't had any issues with the Panthers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Center got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jaysis Villegas out in front who rushed for 172 yards and two scores while picking up 10.8 yards per carry. Villegas is becoming a predictor of the Roughriders' success: when he posts at least 80 rushing yards the team is 2-1 (and 1-3 when he doesn't). Jeremy Bluford also helped with two touchdowns in total.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Center was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 428 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in three consecutive contests.

Another reason for the win was Center's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Grant Gregory was especially locked on to Bullard's QB and sacked him three times.

When it comes to explaining why Bullard lost, don't look at Micah Skaggs. Despite the final result, he threw for 273 yards and three TDs while picking up 11.9 yards per attempt, and also punched in one score on the ground. Luke Stegall helped Skaggs out on the ground, rushing for 117 yards.

Center's record now sits at 3-4. As for Bullard, they now also have a losing record of 3-4.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Center will face off against rival Brownsboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Bullard is set to square off against their familiar foe Carthage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 953 yards in their previous games.
