Southwest is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Medina Valley is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Southwest Dragons will welcome the Medina Valley Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Southwest hadn't beaten McCollum on the road since April 16, 2021 but that history sure didn't bother them on Tuesday. Southwest blew past McCollum 9-2. With that win, the Dragons brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.
Sienna Diaz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Makenzie Calandres, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. Isabela Gutierrez was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Medina Valley got the win against Del Rio on Tuesday by a conclusive 9-2.
Makenzie Vallejo was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. What's more, she posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 3-for-5.
In other pitching news, Lyssy Salazar looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time she hasn't allowed a single hit since back in February.
Back at the plate, Avery Nash was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Madison Camacho, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Medina Valley kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Del Rio only managed four hits.
Southwest has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. Medina Valley's victory bumped their record up to 11-6.
Southwest couldn't quite get it done against Medina Valley when the teams last played back in March of 2024 as they fell 8-4. Can Southwest avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
