The Winona Tigers will be home for the holidays to greet the Nanih Waiya Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Winona will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 229th, while Nanih Waiya is ranked 68th).
It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 57-24, which was the final score in Winona's tilt against Grenada on Friday. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Winona in their matchups with Grenada: they've now lost six in a row.
Meanwhile, Nanih Waiya came tearing into Friday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.7 points) and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on Eupora with a sharp 46-24 victory. The result was nothing new for Nanih Waiya, who have now won five contests by 21 points or more so far this season.
Winona bumped their record down to 3-7 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 20.3 points per game. As for Nanih Waiya, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.
Winona was taken down by Nanih Waiya 55-21 in their previous meeting back in December of 2020. Can Winona avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
