Baseball Recap: Cortez Sets Scoring Season-High Against Tempe

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cortez). They put the hurt on the Tempe Buffaloes with a sharp 21-1 victory on Monday. The win continues a trend for the Colts in their matchups with the Buffaloes: they've now won three in a row.

Martin Barreras made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed since back in February. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Cortez let Julian Cabrera and Kriztian Visuet run wild. Cabrera scored three runs and stole five bases while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Visuet scored four runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-5. Cabrera also brought in three RBI, which is notable because Cortez is 2-1 when he posts at least three RBI, but 1-8-1 otherwise. Joseph Gonzalez also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.

Cortez's victory bumped their record up to 3-9-1. As for Tempe, they dropped their record down to 0-7 with the loss, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season.

Cortez will have a chance to go back-to-back against Tempe: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
