Caldwell is 0-10 against Bishop Kelly since May of 2021 but things could change on Saturday. The Cougars are taking a road trip to square off against the Knights at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Kelly took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Caldwell, who comes in off a win.
Caldwell will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Friday, then bounced right back against Columbia on Tuesday. The Cougars put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 19-5 victory. With that win, the Cougars brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.
Caldwell got a massive performance out of Kloe Fogle, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. That's the most hits Fogle has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Liliana Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Caldwell kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Bishop Kelly faced Nampa in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Knights took a 10-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Knights, who until this contest were averaging 3.95 runs allowed.
Olivia Watt made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games she's played.
Bishop Kelly's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-5. As for Caldwell, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 9-14.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Saturday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Caldwell has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Bishop Kelly struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Caldwell suffered a grim 10-3 defeat to Bishop Kelly in their previous matchup back in April. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
