Newtown secured a 52-48 W over Notre Dame Catholic on Wednesday. Given Newtown's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while Notre Dame Catholic is ranked 106th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
When it comes to explaining why Notre Dame Catholic lost, one person who can't be blamed is Madison Gibbs. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 39.6% of Notre Dame Catholic's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Gonzalez, who scored nine points.
Newtown pushed their record up to 11-1 with that victory, which was their ninth straight at home. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.1 points per game. As for Notre Dame Catholic, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-10.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newtown will square off against Bunnell at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Bunnell is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Notre Dame Catholic, they will head out on the road to take on Bethel at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
